To preserve one’s language is to preserve one’s culture and identity. Teaching native language results in higher academic scores in math and reading, more self- esteem/increased self-efficacy, motivation and ethnic pride among students.

Essential Questions & Enduring Understandings

  • What are Meaningful Connections and what are some of my own?
  • How did my ancestors express their “Meaningful Connections” to each other and the earth? How is it done today?
  • How will developing a deeper awareness of myself, my world and my culture empower my artist’s voice?
  • How can my expressive and creative abilities How does family and community define who you are?
  • Why is it important to learn your language?
  • How can I overcome my hesitancy and began to express myself in Diné language?
  • How is Lakota language structured differently than English language and why?
  • What is Zuni space? Is there differences between Zuni space and other types of spaces?
  • Do I incorporate language in my classroom and intentionally make it less English-dominant?
  • Do I encourage students to use their language?
  • How do I positively approach non-English languages?
